University of Kent, campus

We have been working with the University of Kent, alongside Hawkins\Brown on two new parts of the campus outside Canterbury in Kent. The Cornwallis East building encloses the eastern boundary of the existing car park, creating a courtyard which provided an opportunity to introduce a large area of lawn for students and staff to break out to.

The addition of a grove of Honey Locust trees provides height and softens the outlook from the surrounding buildings with the scheme completed in 2015.

The palette of materials was to be extended to the next phase of Kent Law Clinic to provide a cohesive link across the university campus with a bridge link to first floor level and pedestrian links to ground floor linking to the wider campus. Banks created either side of the bridge link provided opportunities for tree planting for interesting approach to the building of walking amongst the tree canopies.

The Kent Law Clinic project was completed in the autumn of 2016.

Client: University of Kent
Architects: Hawkins\Brown
Landscape Budget: circa £0.55m
Status: Cornwallis East complete in 2015 & Law Clinic complete in 2016
