City of London Freemen’s School, Education

B|D collaborated with Hawkins\Brown, Max Fordham, HOP & Northcroft to deliver the first phase of the City of London Freemen’s School redevelopment in Ashtead Park, Surrey from 2012 to 2014.

B|D completed an extensive enabling works package at the school over the summer of 2012 that included an extended woodland car park, a junior school adventure play trail, an ECB approved cricket practice area, an enhanced MUGA and extended All Weather Hockey pitch set in a Registered Park and sensitive landscape setting.

Phase 1 of the masterplan for the new build music and boarding houses with landscape courtyard was completed in December 2014. The level changes between the buildings are taken up with hard and soft landscape within the courtyard to provide a DDA compliant route and space for students to rest and recline in a sheltered courtyard. The paving design drew inspiration from musical notes with a dynamic patchwork of paving and lighting providing a cohesive link between the music block and the boarding house.

The courtyard is softened through structural planting coupled with a lawn providing space for pupils to congregate.

Phase 2 of the masterplan for the new swimming pool building with links to the wider school campus achieved planning approval in August 2015 and is on site / due for completion in 2017.
